What Is Periodontal Disease and How Is It Managed?

Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is a serious infection that can impact your health and quality of life. While largely preventable, it remains the primary cause of tooth loss in adults 35 and over. At Santa Teresa Dental, we strive to ensure our valued patients maintain healthy gums and teeth for life. From prevention to treatment and management of periodontal disease, we’re here to support your gum health every step of the way!

Periodontal Disease – An Overview

Periodontal disease is a chronic and progressive bacterial infection affecting the gums, connective tissues, and bone supporting the teeth. It usually results from plaque, a sticky colorless biofilm that constantly forms on the teeth, irritating the gums and causing inflammation.

The early stage of gum inflammation and infection is called gingivitis. It is characterized by red, puffy, and bleeding gums. Although the gums are irritated, the teeth remain firmly in place. Gingivitis is usually fully reversible with professional treatment and good home oral hygiene practices.

Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a devastating form of periodontal disease known as periodontitis. The gums begin pulling away from the teeth, leaving spaces called pockets that trap bacteria and debris, causing infection. The body’s immune system goes on overdrive, responding to the inflammation and infection. With time, the pockets deepen, and the bone and tissue supporting the teeth start breaking down. That often leads to loose teeth and, eventually, tooth loss.

Symptoms of periodontitis include painful chewing, bad breath, a persistent bad taste in the mouth, tender or bleeding gums, and sensitive teeth. Patients also report receding gums, poor tooth alignment, changes in how teeth fit together, and loose teeth.

What Is Soft Tissue Management?

Soft tissue management is a non-surgical approach best suited for addressing early to moderate gum disease. Its goal is to prevent the disease from progressing and restore the gum tissue to a healthy state, with the hope of avoiding any invasive surgical treatments.

Treating the Different Stages of Gum Disease

Here’s a closer look at how the different stages of gum disease are treated and managed:

  • Gingivitis: During an initial appointment, we will use a laser to eliminate the disease and provide you with home care instructions. We will follow-up approximately 4-6 weeks later to determine if further treatment is required.
  • Early and Moderate Periodontitis: We will start with two debridement sessions and laser therapy. A third session will involve a thorough evaluation to determine whether you require further treatment or a local antibiotic.
  • Advanced Periodontitis: This advanced stage of gum disease is highly destructive, with devastating effects on your oral health. We may recommend seeing a periodontist for specialized treatment.

After treatment, we typically recommend periodontal maintenance visits every 3-4 months. We will clean your teeth and evaluate your gum health. Our goal is to maintain your gum health and prevent the condition from progressing.

How Can You Prevent Gum Disease from Developing?

The key to keeping your gums healthy and your smile bright is to maintain good oral hygiene practices. That means brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing regularly. It’s also important to visit Santa Teresa Dental for your twice-yearly dental exams and cleanings. By following these simple steps, you can maintain healthy gums and teeth and enjoy a lifetime of confident smiles.
